Becoming an accessible space for people living with dementia or sensory loss
The Forest of Dean Dementia Action Alliance (FODDAA) aims to foster a positive society response to dementia by encouraging local communities and organisations to take practical actions that enable people with dementia to live well.
In the Forest district, the goal is to ensure that individuals with dementia and their carers are respected and can continue to enjoy their lives within their community.
Accessibility to spaces and activities is crucial, and organisations, regardless of size, are encouraged to support this initiative by becoming dementia-aware / dementia inclusive.
Supporting this cause can help organisations retain and attract customers, improve staff confidence and customer service, and demonstrate social responsibility and compliance with equality legislation.
The FODDAA has developed checklists to help organisations assess the accessibility of their spaces and services, working towards making their premises user-friendly for people with dementia. These checklists are not exhaustive audits but are designed to identify features that might impact users and to give organisations the option to make enhancements where appropriate.
Organisations without physical spaces can still participate by completing relevant parts of the form or contacting the FODDAA for more information.
Additionally, the FODDAA offers dementia friends training, workshops on accessibility, and support for specific queries.
